Playing Roulette
Roulette is a very engaging gambling game named for the French word for ‘small wheel’. The croupier, the spinner of the wheel, spins the wheel and then while it is spinning rolls a ball in the opposite direction. The surface of the wheel is tilted inward and when the wheel slows down the ball lands inside one of the 38 spaces.
Players can wager based on many different options. These options include the number that the ball stops on, the color the ball stops on, whether the numbered space was odd or even, and more.
The pockets of the wheel are numbered from 1 to 36. These numbered pockets alternate between red and black. The numbers on the wheel are not in numerical order and the colors do not always alternate red-black-red-black as some red-red and black-black numbers neighbor each other. There are two green spaces, 0 and 00, both of which are neither odd nor even in Roulette.
Betting Options
Inside Bets are those bets that pick specific numbers or groups of numbers.
Outside bets are those that include picking red/black, odd/even, or a group of numbers like the bottom third (1-12), middle third (13-24), and top third (25-36), a select column of numbers, and bottom half (1-18) and top half (19-36).
Payouts are based on the odds for each type of bets probability of occurring. A chart usually appears showing the payout structure and bets can be made until the croupier calls out “no more bets”.
Inside bets
- Straight: a single number. The chip is placed entirely on the middle of a number square.
- Split: a bet on two adjoining numbers, either on the vertical or horizontal (i.e.14-17 or 8-9). The chip is placed on the line between these numbers.
- Street: a bet on three numbers on a single horizontal line. The chip is placed on the edge line of a number at the end of the line.
- Corner (or square): a bet on four numbers in a square layout (as in 11-12-14-15). The chip is placed at the horizontal and vertical intersection of the lines between the numbers.
- Sixline: a bet on two adjoining streets, with the chip placed at the corresponding intersection.
Outside bets
- Even Money Bets: a bet on 18 numbers. This is placed in the betting box with the name of the bet on it (black or red, low (1-18) or high (19-36), even or odd)
- Group Bets: a bet on the first (1-12), second (13-24), or third group (25-36) of twelve numbers.
- Column: a bet on all 12 numbers on any of the three vertical lines (the first column are numbers 1-4-7-10-13-16-19-22-25-28-31-34). The bet is put on the space at the end of the last number in the column.
The casino edge is based on the 0 and 00 not being calculated in paying the player. For instance, if a player bets on a single number there is a probability of 1 to 38 that the number will occur. However, the casino only pays that player at a rat of 1 to 36 times the bet.

Roulette Strategy
Roulette is fun game and is very popular in casinos. The house does hold an edge and it is probably impossible to beat it in the long run. However, it can be a quite enjoyable way to gamble and if you bet within your means you can have fun without giving up a considerable house edge as you would if you played slot machines. Most bets in roulette return the same percentage as the odds of that particular bet occurring so betting even or odd, black or red, or picking a number does not matter statistically so bet as you desire. If you bet numbers, it is better to bet only one number at a time instead of betting a bunch of numbers at once. That is because if you bet the number 6 in two games, you have the chance to win twice by hitting a 6 both games. If you were to bet the number 6 and number 8 at the same time, you double the chance of winning in that particular game, but you can only win one time.
